Chapter 13

Once Kyra calmed down, the familiar feeling of loneliness settled over her. She texted Julie, who was packing for her flight out the following day. To celebrate her last night in Switzerland, they went out to eat, and then clubbing. It was a welcome distraction, and Kyra didn’t get in until after midnight.

But the next morning, she was alone again. Kyra busied herself with packing, taking her time. Her flight was booked for the following day. Julie was en route to New York, and planned to spend the holidays with her parents in New Jersey.

Leah was already at home, probably figuring out what to wear for Christmas with the Rinaldis. Normally, Kyra was there to help with wardrobe choices. She wished she was, instead of staring at the walls of a hotel room by herself. And facing the holiday alone.

By mid-afternoon, Kyra couldn’t take it. She checked the time, and figured Leah would be up. Flopping on the bed, she called and was relieved when her friend answered.

“Kyra. It’s good to hear from you. You’re still in Zurich?”

“Hey, Leah. I’m still here. I’m supposed to fly out tomorrow.”

“We just got back, and I’m in the process of repacking. We’re spending Christmas with Gianni’s family. It’s cold here, but not as cold as in Zurich. I have to make some wardrobe adjustments. At least there is no snow right now.”

“I guess you’re on your own for this one,” Kyra said. “But at least you don’t need to shop.”

“No, I have an abundance of winter wear. So how about you? Is it going good with Stephano?”

Kyra’s heart sank. “Unfortunately, no.”

“That’s disappointing,” Leah said. “What happened?”

Kyra rolled onto her back and crossed her ankles. “It’s me. I blew it.”

“It can’t be that bad.”

“It is,” Kyra said, and proceeded to recite the details of how she reacted to the confrontation the day before. “I haven’t spoken to Stephano since then.”

Leah’s tone was more positive than Kyra felt. “That was just yesterday, right?”

“Yes, but it seems like a month,” Kyra said. “I miss him. A lot.”

“He will get over it,” Leah said. “Stephano won’t stay mad at you. He probably thinks you are mad at him.”

“I was. But I freaked out, that’s all.” Kyra rubbed her eyes. “I just reacted. I have a low tolerance for shouting and fighting.”

“Clearly,” Leah said. “I understand. I don’t like shouting either. But your reaction was pretty intense. When you get back, we need to talk.” She paused. “I think there is more you haven’t told me.”

That was true. “Thanks for the offer. I’ll probably take you up on it. But that doesn’t help me right now.”

“No, it doesn’t.” Leah was silent, and Kyra let her think, hoping she would have some good advice. “There’s only one thing to do.”

Kyra dared not hope for a way out of this mess. But she was listening. “What do you suggest?”

“You have to call Stephano. Talk to him about it,” Leah said. “He’s not a bad guy. Gianni would have told me if he wasn’t your type, or if he was bad for you.
